Safeguarding Policy

Statement of Intent

The safety and wellbeing of every child is my highest priority. I am committed to providing a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment where children feel protected, heard, and respected at all times.

All safeguarding concerns will be taken seriously and responded to in line with current UK safeguarding guidance.

About Me

I am an Ofsted-registered childminder with:

  • Enhanced DBS

  • Safeguarding Level 3 (DSL trained)

  • Training in the STILL Method Child Grief Programme

Safeguarding Responsibility

I have a duty to:

  • Protect children from harm

  • Respond appropriately to any safeguarding concerns

  • Follow safeguarding procedures where a child may be at risk

Safeguarding is always prioritised over confidentiality.

Recognising Concerns

Safeguarding concerns may include:

  • Changes in behaviour or mood

  • Signs of emotional distress

  • Disclosure of harm or abuse

  • Neglect or lack of appropriate care

All concerns, however small, will be taken seriously.

Responding to a Disclosure

If a child shares information that raises concern, I will:

  • Listen calmly and without judgement

  • Reassure the child they have done the right thing

  • Not promise confidentiality

  • Record the information as accurately as possible

  • Take appropriate action following safeguarding procedures

Reporting Concerns

If a safeguarding concern arises:

  • I will contact the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) if sessions are school-based

  • For private sessions, I will follow local safeguarding procedures, including contacting:

    • Devon Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH)

    • Emergency services if a child is at immediate risk

Parents will usually be informed, unless doing so may place the child at further risk.

Working with Schools

When working within a school:

  • I will follow the school’s safeguarding policy and procedures

  • All concerns will be reported directly to the school’s DSL

  • I will work in collaboration with school staff to ensure the child’s safety

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is respected; however:

  • Safeguarding concerns will always be shared with appropriate professionals

  • Information will only be shared on a need-to-know basis

Professional Boundaries

  • This service provides non-clinical bereavement support

  • I do not provide therapy or crisis intervention

  • Any concerns beyond my scope will be referred to appropriate services

Record Keeping

  • All safeguarding concerns will be recorded securely and accurately

  • Records will be stored in line with GDPR and data protection guidelines

Review

This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure it reflects current safeguarding guidance and best practice.
